Previous to his arrest he was making preparations for leading to the altar an interesting girl of about twenty years of age named Abby Croat. For some reason it was not desirable for the fair damsel to wait till her lover had served his term of punishment and accordingly it was arranged and permission given that the nuptial knot should he tied in the jail. A minister was sent for and the marriage ceremony performed in the presence of the bride and bridegroom's relatives, the Chief of Police, Major Macdonald, an issuer of marriage licences, a sheriff officer, officials of the prison and the other guests. After the ceremony was over, congratulations were extended to the bridal party from all present. SCOTT-HOTCHKISS (Caledonia) - There was quite a flutter of excitement in the village last Tuesday evening, the 18th instant, on the occasion of the marriage of Mr. William Scott to Miss Augusta Hotchkiss. The ceremony took place in St. Paul's Episcopal Church which was filled to repletion by the elite of the village and neighbourhood. The beautiful and impressive marriage ceremony of the Church of England was conducted by the incumbent, the Rev. H. E. Mellish, of whose congregation the bride was a member. The bride who was given away by her brother, Captain Mellish, looked, as all brides should, most lovely as also did the bridesmaid, Miss Black. The groom's well known face never wore a serener or happier smile, and the best man, a cousin and namesake, Mr. William Scott of the Dominion Telegraph Co., Brantford, was radiant with smiles. The happy couple after many congratulations at the church were accompanied to the station by a number of friends and left by the Hamilton train for the east, the church ringing out meanwhile in merry tones in response to the vigorous pulls of a few kind friends. As the happy pair passed from the station, all present breathed an inward prayer for their future health, prosperity, and happiness, while some of the older matrons whispered to their marriageable daughters "Go ye and do likewise", and paterfamilias suggested to their sons "It is not good for man to be alone". It may be literally said of the wedding that "all went merry as a marriage bell".
